Case IH 5241 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Loader Arm Solenoid(s) Shorted To Power

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the loader arm's directional control solenoid is receiving unexpected voltage (shorted to a 12V power source), preventing the module from properly regulating the hydraulic fluid flow to the loader arm cylinders.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the loader arm directional valve. Look for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires that could be bridging the solenoid power or return wires to a 12V source.

  2. Voltage Test: Disconnect the solenoid connector at the loader valve. Turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to check the pins on the harness side. If the return/ground circuit shows 12V, there is a short in the wiring harness.

  3. Ohm / Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (ohms) across the pins of the loader arm solenoid itself. If the reading is 0 ohms (or significantly lower than the manufacturer's spec), the solenoid coil is internally shorted and must be replaced.

  4. UCM Pin Check: Inspect the UCM connectors for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion, which can cause voltage to bleed across circuits.

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure & Disconnect Power

    Lower the loader arms to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure. Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve

    Locate the loader arm directional control valve block (usually mounted on the loader frame or under the cab, depending on if it's a tractor or skid steer).

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, trace the wire back to the UCM. Splice and solder a new section of wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.

  4. Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

    Clean the area around the directional valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid. Unscrew the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem and slide the old coil off. Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Test and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool (or the machine's onboard display) to clear the inactive fault codes. Operate the loader joystick to confirm smooth raise/lower functions without the code returning.
