Case IH 5242 – UCM: Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Loader Arm Solenoid(s) Shorted To Ground

Issue description

The system has detected a short circuit to ground in the electrical circuit that supplies power to the directional solenoid(s) responsible for raising and lowering the loader arm (boom). This triggers a Red Master Telltale Lamp.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV185
  • SV300
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380
  • L218

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness (harness X-27) between the UCM and the loader arm directional valve solenoid (Y-007 or Y-009) for chafing, melting, or physical damage.

  2. Disconnect the harness from the UCM and the solenoid. Using a multi-meter and a jumper wire attached to the chassis ground, probe the specified pins on the connector to test for an active short to ground in the wiring.

  3. Verify battery voltage using a multi-meter. A reading of less than 11.6 volts indicates a dead battery, which can cause erratic UCM faults. Charge to at least 12.4 volts.

  4. If no physical damage or abnormal multi-meter readings are found, erase the DTC from the UCM and operate the machine to see if the code returns. Consider UCM replacement only after all other wiring possibilities are exhausted.

Repair steps

  1. Power down the machine, relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the loader directional control valve block.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty loader arm solenoid.

  4. Remove the two retaining screws securing the solenoid to the loader valve block.

  5. Remove the old loader valve solenoid.

  6. Insert the new loader valve solenoid (e.g., Y-009) into the loader valve block.

  7. Insert and tighten the two retaining screws.

  8. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  9. Reconnect the battery, clear the UCM fault codes, and test the boom raise/lower functions.
