Case IH 524241-31 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV): Internal Fault within the Trailer Brake Controller
Issue description
The controller has detected a critical internal hardware or software failure (such as a memory integrity failure, checksum error, or internal circuit short). When this code is active, the system typically disables the trailer braking function as a safety precaution.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Optum Series
Check the cause
Verify that the tractor is not experiencing system overvoltage or undervoltage conditions, which can cause the ITBV to log internal communication or checksum errors.
Inspect the electrical connector at the ITBV for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins. Clean the contacts and ensure a secure connection.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check if the ITBV software is outdated. Update if necessary (e.g., version 1.3.0.0) to resolve false internal fault logic.
Clear the fault code, cycle the key switch, and operate the tractor. If the code immediately returns as Active, the module has suffered a hard internal failure.
Repair steps
Depressurize and Disconnect
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the ITBV
Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly, typically mounted near the rear remote valves or transmission housing.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the main wiring harness connector from the ITBV ECU.
Disconnect Hydraulics
Carefully disconnect the hydraulic lines (such as the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube). Cap all hoses and fittings immediately to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Remove the Module
Unbolt the ITBV mounting hardware and remove the faulty valve/ECU assembly.
Install the New Part
Mount the replacement ITBV module and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.
Bleed the System
Because the hydraulic circuit was opened, you must bleed the trailer brake hydraulic lines to remove any trapped air.
Calibration/Programming
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH EST laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port. The new ITBV module will need to be configured/calibrated to the tractor's CAN bus network to recognize the specific transmission and chassis configuration.
