524244-31 - ITBV

Case IH 524244-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Electronic Control Unit (ECU): ITBV Trailer brake controller internal fault

Issue description

The fault code indicates a Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault. The ITBV system automatically activates the trailer's braking system to equalize the braking effect between the tractor and the trailer. An internal fault means the controller has detected a hardware failure, memory error, or internal processing failure within its own circuitry.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH Magnum series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, including AFS Connect and CVXDrive models)
  • Case IH Puma series (Models 140, 150, 165, 175)
  • Case IH Optum series (e.g., 250 CVX)
  • Case IH Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the ISO 11783 standard diagnostic connector (Diagnostic connector #1) via the CAN bus. Check for related voltage codes (e.g., 12883 System Overvoltage, 12884 System Undervoltage) or communication faults (12861/12862) which might mimic an internal fault.

  2. Check the ITBV software version. Software updates (e.g., updating the Trailer Brake Control iTBV to software version 1.3.0.0, part number 51595354) may be required.

  3. Inspect the fuse panel located behind the operator's seat (accessed by removing the rubber liner and using a coin/screwdriver to rotate the large screws 1/4 turn to release the tray). Check fuse F-030 (10 Amp), which supplies the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (iTBV) UNSW B+.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the ITBV module, specifically checking the X-386F wire connector and dust cap for moisture, damage, or corrosion.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

Ensure the machine is safely parked before beginning repairs.

  2. Access the fuse and relay panel behind the operator's seat to verify the 10A ITBV fuse (F-030) is intact.

Check the fuse before proceeding to module replacement.

  3. If the diagnostic tool confirms a hard internal fault (and software updates do not clear it), locate the ITBV ECU and pneumatic valve assembly.

Identify the components to be replaced.

  4. Disconnect the electrical harnesses from the ITBV ECU, checking for any damaged pins.

    Inspect the connections while disconnecting.

  5. Remove the mounting hardware securing the ITBV ECU.

Free the faulty module from its mounting location.

  6. Install the replacement ITBV Electronic Control Unit.

    Mount the new ECU securely.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harnesses.

    Ensure all connections are secure.

  8. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) via the CAN bus diagnostic connector to calibrate the new module and ensure it is configured correctly for the specific tractor model.

Calibration is required for the new module to function properly.

  9. Clear the fault codes and test the trailer brake operation.

    Verify the repair was successful.
