Case IH 524256-31 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault
Issue description
Fault code 524256-31 indicates an internal hardware or software failure within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) assembly. The ITBV is a pneumatic trailer brake controller that automatically regulates the trailer's braking system to equalize the braking effect between the tractor and the trailer, preventing jack-knifing. An internal fault means the module cannot reliably process deceleration data or control the pneumatic output, disabling the advanced trailer braking features.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Puma 150
- Puma 165
- Puma 185-260 CVX
- Maxxum 145
- Maxxum Activedrive 8
- Optum CVX Drive
- Magnum 260
Check the cause
Check fuses at the Electronic Power Distribution Unit (EPDU): F-601 (15 A), F-602 (15 A), and F-030 (10 A) to rule out power supply issues.
Inspect the main wiring harness connector at the ITBV (Connector X-386F) for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture.
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the code. If the code returns immediately upon key-on, the internal fault is hard-set and the valve must be replaced.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Locate the air reservoir and open the drain valve to completely bleed all compressed air from the pneumatic braking system.
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery disconnect switch to prevent electrical shorts.
Disconnect Electrical
Remove the dust cap if applicable, and unplug the X-386F electrical connector from the ITBV.
Remove Pneumatic Lines
Mark the orientation of the incoming and outgoing pneumatic air lines, then carefully disconnect them from the valve body.
Remove the Valve
Unbolt the ITBV mounting bracket from the chassis and remove the faulty valve.
Install the New Valve
Mount the replacement ITBV and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect Lines and Wiring
Reconnect the pneumatic lines securely. Plug in the X-386F electrical connector.
System Test
Close the air reservoir drain valve, turn on the battery, and start the tractor to build air pressure. Check for air leaks at the fittings.
Calibration
Connect the EST diagnostic tool, clear the 524256-31 fault code, and perform any required ITBV calibration procedures as outlined in the CCM & APH Stage V MR On-Board Diagnostics manual.
