524257-31 - ITBV

Case IH 524257-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): Trailer brake controller internal fault

Issue description

The controller has detected a critical internal hardware or software failure that prevents it from reliably operating the trailer brakes. When this code is active, the system typically disables the trailer braking function as a safety precaution.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 180
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 200
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 220
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 240
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 250
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 280
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 310
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 340
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum 380

Check the cause

  1. Check power supply and fuses: Verify the fuses supplying the ITBV (e.g., 10A fuse F-030 for iTBV UNSW B+ and 15A fuses for permanent and switched battery power).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness: Check the electronic control unit harness for the trailer brake for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or disconnected pins.

  3. Check for accompanying codes: Look for communication fault codes that would point to a CAN bus wiring issue rather than a dead module.

  4. Software verification: Check the software version of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV). An internal fault can sometimes be resolved by reflashing the module with updated software.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Relieve Pressure

If the tractor is equipped with pneumatic or hydraulic trailer brakes, safely bleed the air reservoirs or relieve hydraulic pressure from the lines connected to the ITBV.

  3. Locate and Disconnect

Locate the ITBV module. Disconnect the main electrical harness from the ECU.

  4. Remove Lines

Disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines from the trailer brake valve.

  5. Remove the Module

Unbolt the faulty ITBV assembly from its mounting bracket and remove it from the tractor.

  6. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement ITBV ECU/Valve assembly.

  7. Reconnect

Reattach the pneumatic/hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness.

  8. Restore Power and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. A dealer diagnostic tool (CNH EST) will likely be required to flash the correct software onto the new module, calibrate the brake pedal sensors, and clear the active 524257-31 fault code.
