Case IH 524258-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): Internal Fault within the Trailer Brake Controller

An internal hardware or software failure within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) module itself. FMI 31 indicates the device has failed and the engine has shut down, or a critical condition exists.

   Verify the power supply circuits to the ITBV by checking specific fuses (e.g., Fuse F-030 10A for unswitched B+, Fuse F-601 15A for switched battery power, and Fuse F-602 15A for permanent battery power).

   Inspect the main electrical connector at the ITBV (connector X-386F) for corrosion, pushed pins, or water ingress.

   Check for accompanying ITBV communication fault codes (such as 12892, 12898, or 12899) which might indicate a CAN bus failure rather than an internal module failure.

   Attempt to clear the code and cycle the key to rule out a temporary software lock-up. If the code immediately returns, it is a hard fault requiring replacement.

   Depressurize the System

   Safely bleed all air from the pneumatic trailer brake reservoirs (using the drain valves) to ensure there is no pressure in the lines.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts or CAN bus spikes.

   Disconnect the ITBV

   Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve. Disconnect the electrical harness connector (X-386F).

   Remove Pneumatic/Hydraulic Lines

   Carefully unscrew and disconnect the brake tubes and fittings from the valve assembly.

   Remove the Valve

   Unbolt the ITBV mounting hardware and remove the faulty unit from the tractor.

   Install the New Valve

   Mount the replacement ITBV and secure the bolts. Reconnect all pneumatic lines and ensure fittings are tight to prevent air leaks.

   Reconnect Electricals

   Plug in the electrical connector and reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Calibration/Programming

   Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). A new ITBV will likely require software flashing (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0) and calibration to sync with the tractor's Driveline Electronic Control (DEC) and Body Control Module (BCM).
