Case IH 524261-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) ECU: Trailer brake controller internal fault.
Issue description
The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) has detected a critical internal hardware or microprocessor failure within its own circuitry. The module can no longer guarantee safe, independent regulation of the trailer brakes and must be inspected or replaced.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Optum
Check the cause
Check the 15A switched and 15A permanent battery power supply fuses supplying the ITBV and verify voltage at the harness connector
Inspect the wiring harness between the ITBV and the CCM for chafing, moisture ingress, or damaged pins
Look for accompanying CAN communication codes (e.g., 12892 or 12899) which may point to a wiring issue rather than a dead module
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check the ITBV software version (updates like version 1.3.0.0 / part 51595354 can resolve false internal fault flags)
Repair steps
Depower the Machine
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Depressurize the System
Relieve all pneumatic air pressure or hydraulic pressure from the trailer braking circuit before disconnecting any lines.
Locate the ITBV
The ITBV assembly is typically mounted near the rear axle/transmission housing.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the ITBV ECU. Then, disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines (such as the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube). Cap the lines to prevent contamination.
Remove the Module
Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the ITBV valve block and ECU assembly to the chassis and remove the faulty unit.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement ITBV assembly and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Remove the caps and reconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Restore Power
Reconnect the tractor's battery.
Flash and Calibrate
Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. You must flash the correct firmware to the new ITBV ECU and perform the mandatory end-of-line trailer brake calibration so the tractor's CCM recognizes the new module.
