Case IH 524262-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault
Issue description
This code indicates an internal failure within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) system. The ITBV system uses algorithms to automatically activate the trailer's braking system to equalize the braking effect between the tractor and the trailer, which is especially critical for tractors using CVT transmissions to prevent jack-knifing. When this code is logged, the controller has detected an internal hardware or software fault that prevents it from operating safely.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Magnum series (180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Puma series (140, 150, 165, 175, 200)
- Maxxum series (145, 150)
- Optum series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the ITBV for any signs of chafing, melting, or physical damage
Disconnect the ITBV harness and check for corroded, pushed-back, or bent pins. Ensure the connector is fully seated and locked
Verify that the ITBV is receiving proper voltage from the battery/PDM and has a clean, secure ground connection
Test the CAN Hi and CAN Lo lines at the ITBV connector to ensure there are no open circuits or shorts to ground/power
If power, ground, and CAN communication are all within specification and the wiring is intact, confirm the internal failure of the ITBV module
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the ITBV
Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly, typically mounted near the rear axle or transmission housing.
Depressurize
Safely relieve any residual pneumatic or hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake lines.
Disconnect Lines & Wiring
Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the ITBV ECU. Disconnect the associated pneumatic/hydraulic hoses and tubes (e.g., the ITBV to Solenoid Valve tube).
Removal
Remove the mounting bolts/hardware securing the ITBV module and remove the faulty unit.
Installation
Mount the new ITBV ECU/Valve assembly and tighten the hardware to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect all pneumatic/hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical connectors, ensuring the weather seals are intact.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST) to clear the 524262-31 fault code and perform any required software flashing or calibration procedures for the new ITBV module.
