Case IH 524269-31 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) module: ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

The system has detected an internal hardware or software failure within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) controller. The FMI 31 indicates that the specific condition exists but further sub-type information is not available, pointing to a general internal module failure.

   Check system voltage to verify the tractor is not experiencing overvoltage (Code 12883) or undervoltage (Code 12884), which can cause the ITBV to malfunction and log false internal errors.

   Inspect the main electrical connector at the ITBV valve for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins. Ensure there are no communication faults with the Vehicle Controller (Codes 12892, 12898, 12899).

   Verify the software version of the Trailer Brake Control (iTBV). A software re-flash (OEM software part number 51595354) may be required before condemning the physical valve.

   Depressurize the system

   Turn off the tractor and relieve all hydraulic and pneumatic pressure from the trailer brake system to ensure safe removal.

   Disconnect electricals

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the ITBV solenoid valve.

   Disconnect lines

   Carefully disconnect the hydraulic/air hoses routed to the valve, including the specific ITBV-to-Solenoid Valve tube. Cap the lines immediately to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

   Remove the valve

   Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the ITBV valve to the tractor chassis/bracket and remove the faulty unit.

   Install the new valve

   Mount the replacement ITBV valve and secure the bolts.

   Reconnect components

   Reattach all hydraulic/pneumatic lines and plug in the electrical connector.

   Bleed and clear codes

   Bleed the trailer brake hydraulic system (if applicable) to remove any trapped air. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the 524269-31 fault code and calibrate the new valve if required by the software.
