Case IH 524273-31 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

The fault code indicates a Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault, pointing to an internal hardware failure, memory failure, or checksum error within the controller's processor.

   Verify that the tractor is not experiencing a system undervoltage condition (especially during cranking), which can cause the ITBV to fail its internal boot-up checks.

   Check the fuse panel for the 15A permanent battery power supply and the 15A switched battery power supply routed to the ITBV.

   Inspect the diagnostic connections and wiring harness for the CAN 1 HI and CAN 1 LO lines (Main Bus - 250 kbps) between the ITBV and the Vehicle Controller.

   Ensure there are no active short-circuits in the peripheral components connected to the ITBV, such as the TCV pressure sensor, service brake pedal switch, or the inlet valve (IV).

   Power Cycle

   Turn the machine off, disconnect the battery for a few minutes, and reconnect it to perform a hard reset. Check if the internal checksum/memory fault clears.

   Harness Testing

   Disconnect the harness at the ITBV. Using a multimeter, verify that the 15A constant and 15A switched power pins have full battery voltage, and that the ground pin has high continuity to the chassis.

   Module Replacement

   If the power, ground, and CAN lines are intact but the 524273-31 internal fault remains active, the ITBV has suffered a permanent internal failure and cannot be repaired in the field. Remove the pneumatic lines and electrical connectors, and unbolt the ITBV from the chassis.

   Installation & Calibration

   Install the new ITBV. Because it is an intelligent node on the CAN bus, you must use the dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform the 'Trailer Brake Configuration' and calibrate the new module to the vehicle.
