Case IH 524274-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve) Controller / ECU: ITBV: Trailer brake controller internal fault
Issue description
The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) detects an internal hardware failure, a software checksum error, or a critical internal processing fault, preventing it from safely regulating braking pressure to the trailer.

Check the cause
Check Software Version: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if a software re-flash resolves the internal checksum error (e.g., software version 1.3.0.0; part number 51595354).
Inspect Wiring & Voltage: Inspect the main electrical connector at the ITBV for moisture intrusion, corroded pins, or damaged wires. Verify that the module is receiving steady system voltage and has a solid ground.
Hard Reset: Clear the fault code using the EST, cycle the key, and perform a battery disconnect for 15 minutes. If the 524274-31 code returns immediately upon key-on, the ITBV module has suffered a permanent internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Depressurize the System
Safely relieve all air pressure from the pneumatic trailer brake reservoirs (using the air reservoir drain valve) or hydraulic pressure if equipped with a hydraulic ITBV system.
Locate the ITBV
The valve and ECU assembly is typically mounted near the rear axle, transmission housing, or adjacent to the air reservoirs.
Disconnect Lines
Mark and disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines from the ITBV block. Cap the lines to prevent contamination.
Disconnect Electrical
Unplug the wiring harness connector from the ITBV ECU.
Remove the Valve
Unbolt the ITBV assembly from its mounting bracket and remove it from the tractor.
Install the New ITBV
Mount the replacement ITBV assembly and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.
Reconnect
Reattach all pneumatic/hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness.
Restore Power & Test
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure. Check all fittings for air/fluid leaks.
Calibration
Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. Configure/calibrate the new ITBV ECU to the tractor's CAN bus network to communicate properly with the Driveline Electronic Control (DEC) and Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (VECU).
