Case IH 524275-31 - ITBV – Trailer Brake Control (iTBV) module / ECU: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault
Issue description
The Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV) has detected an internal hardware failure, memory error, or software logic fault.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Maxxum
- Case IH Puma
Check the cause
Verify power and ground: Check the power supply and ground circuits to the ITBV ECU for voltage drops, poor grounds, or voltage spikes that can cause internal logic errors.
Inspect the wiring harness: Inspect the hydraulic trailer brake wire harness for chafing, shorts, or corrosion at the connector pins.
Check software version: Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the current software version of the ITBV module. Flash the module with the latest software update to resolve potential false internal fault flags.
Clear and retest: Clear the fault code. If the code immediately returns upon key-on or brake application, the ITBV ECU has suffered a hard internal failure and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the ITBV Assembly
Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve and ECU assembly (typically mounted near the rear remote valves or under the right-hand cab area depending on the specific model).
Disconnect Electrical & Hydraulics
Carefully disconnect the ITBV wiring harness. If replacing the entire valve block assembly, relieve hydraulic pressure and disconnect the trailer brake tubes (e.g., the tube running from the ITBV to Solenoid Valve). Cap all hydraulic lines to prevent contamination.
Remove the Module
Unbolt the mounting hardware and remove the faulty ITBV ECU/Valve.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement ITBV component and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect
Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness. Reconnect the tractor battery.
Bleed the System
If the hydraulic valve portion was opened, bleed the trailer brake hydraulic circuit according to the service manual.
Program and Calibrate
Connect the CNH EST. The new ITBV ECU will require programming to the tractor's CAN bus network and a calibration routine to ensure proper braking response algorithms.
