Case IH 524277-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve / Trailer Brake Control): ITBV: Trailer brake controller internal fault
Issue description
Indicates a general internal hardware or software failure within the module that prevents it from operating the trailer brakes safely.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Steiger series
Check the cause
Verify the ITBV software version (updating to software part number 51595354, version 1.3.0.0 can sometimes resolve internal logic faults without hardware replacement).
Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the ITBV for steady battery voltage and a clean ground to rule out false internal faults caused by severe undervoltage or overvoltage.
Check the ITBV harness connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could disrupt internal circuitry communication with the main CAN bus.
Clear the fault code using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and cycle the ignition. If the code returns immediately, the internal circuitry is definitively compromised.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Ensure the tractor is safely parked before beginning repairs.
Disconnect the tractor's battery.
Prevents electrical shorts during the repair.
Relieve all residual air or hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake system.
Prevents injury from pressurized lines.
Locate the ITBV module/valve assembly.
Typically mounted near the rear axle or transmission valve block.
Disconnect the electrical harness connectors.
Disconnect from the ITBV ECU and the ITBV solenoid valve.
Carefully disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines.
Such as the ITBV to solenoid valve tube. Cap all open lines immediately to prevent system contamination.
Remove the mounting hardware and extract the faulty ITBV unit.
Take out the old assembly.
Install the replacement ITBV valve/ECU assembly.
Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.
Reconnect the brake lines and the electrical harness.
Ensure all connections are secure.
Reconnect the battery.
Restore power to the tractor.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the diagnostic port.
Configure/calibrate the new ITBV module to the tractor's CAN network and clear any stored fault codes.
Start the tractor and perform a functional test.
Allow the pneumatic/hydraulic system to build pressure, test the trailer brakes, and check for leaks.
