Case IH 524278-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve): Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault
Issue description
Indicates a critical internal hardware failure, memory error, or software corruption within the trailer brake control module itself, rather than an issue with external sensors or wiring.
Applies to these machines

Check the cause
Check power and ground to the ITBV by verifying voltage and checking the Electronic Power Distribution Unit (EPDU) for blown fuses (e.g., 7.5A F-674 and 15A F-696).
Check for accompanying system overvoltage (Code 12883) or undervoltage (Code 12884) faults. If present, diagnose the tractor's alternator and battery health first.
Inspect the ITBV wiring harness (part 55.032.AC) and connectors for moisture intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check module communication. If it communicates, attempt to re-flash the ITBV with the latest software (part 51595354, version 1.3.0.0). If the flash fails or the code immediately returns, the module must be replaced.
Repair steps
Depower the Machine
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the main battery switch to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the ITBV
The module is typically mounted on a bracket near the rear remote valves or integrated into the pneumatic/hydraulic trailer brake assembly at the rear of the tractor.
Disconnect Lines
Carefully relieve any residual pneumatic or hydraulic pressure. Disconnect the trailer brake tubes running from the ITBV to the solenoid valves. Cap the lines to prevent contamination.
Remove the Module
Disconnect the main electrical harness from the ITBV. Unbolt the module/bracket assembly (often secured by a guard, part 90325813) and remove the faulty ECU.
Install the New ITBV
Mount the replacement ITBV module and torque the bracket bolts to OEM spec. Reconnect the hydraulic/pneumatic lines and the electrical harness.
Calibration and Configuration
Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port. You must configure the new module to the tractor's CAN bus and perform an End of Line (EOL) calibration for the trailer brakes to function properly.
Test
Clear all inactive fault codes and test the trailer brake output pressures to ensure the fault does not return.
