524284-31 - ITBV

Case IH 524284-31 - ITBV – ITBV: Trailer Brake Controller Internal Fault

Issue description

The controller has detected an unrecoverable error within its own hardware or software processing. The "31" Failure Mode Indicator (FMI) typically indicates that a condition exists where the module's internal logic, memory, or circuitry has failed.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • Puma
  • Maxxum
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's battery voltage to rule out system overvoltage or undervoltage causing false internal faults

  2. Disconnect the ITBV electrical connector and inspect for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins

  3. Load-test the power and ground circuits feeding the ITBV to ensure stable voltage under load

  4. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check for available software updates that address false internal fault logging

  5. If power, ground, and software are verified and the code remains active, the ITBV has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Relieve Pressure

Relieve any residual pneumatic or hydraulic pressure in the trailer braking system.

  3. Locate the ITBV

Locate the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve assembly (typically mounted near the rear axle/trailer brake couplers).

  4. Disconnect Lines

Carefully disconnect the pneumatic/hydraulic lines from the valve assembly. Cap the lines immediately to prevent dirt contamination.

  5. Disconnect Electrical

Unplug the wiring harness connector from the ITBV.

  6. Remove the Module

Unbolt the ITBV from its mounting bracket and remove the faulty unit.

  7. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement ITBV and torque the bolts to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect

Reconnect the hydraulic/pneumatic lines and plug in the electrical harness.

  9. Bleed the System

If hydraulic lines were opened, bleed the trailer brake system according to the service manual.

  10. Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST to clear the fault codes and perform the required ITBV module configuration/calibration to sync it with the tractor's CAN network.
