Case IH 524285-31 - ITBV – ITBV (Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve / Trailer Brake Controller): Trailer brake controller internal fault
Issue description
Internal hardware or software failure within the Intelligent Trailer Brake Valve (ITBV). The system has detected that the controller's internal logic, memory, or circuitry is malfunctioning, preventing it from safely regulating the hydraulic trailer brakes.

Check the cause
Check system voltage to verify that the tractor is not experiencing overvoltage or undervoltage, as power supply issues can cause the ITBV to log internal logic faults.
Inspect the dual hydraulic trailer brake wire harness (e.g., harness part 55.032.AC) for chafing, water intrusion, or bent pins at the ITBV connector.
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for software updates. Reflashing the module to the latest software version (e.g., software part number 51595354, version 1.3.0.0) may resolve the internal fault without requiring hardware replacement.
Clear the fault code and cycle the key. If the code immediately returns as 'Active', the internal failure is a hard fault and the module must be replaced.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Turn off the tractor, apply the parking brake, and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the trailer brake circuit.
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts and CAN bus errors during removal.
Disconnect the ITBV
Locate the ITBV valve assembly. Carefully unplug the main electrical harness connector from the ECU portion of the valve.
Remove the Valve
Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines attached to the ITBV. Cap the lines immediately to prevent contamination. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the valve assembly.
Install the New ITBV
Mount the replacement ITBV valve and torque the bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and plug in the electrical harness.
Restore Power
Reconnect the negative battery cable.
Module Programming/Calibration
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST). The new ITBV must be programmed and paired with the tractor's CAN bus system to clear security/immobilizer mismatches (which can trigger related SPN 524285 configuration codes) and to calibrate the brake pressure sensors.
