Case IH 5243 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Arm Valve (Directional) Solenoids Return Open Circuit

The controller has detected a break or disconnect (open circuit) on the return (ground/common) side of the electrical circuit that powers the directional solenoids for the loader arm/boom valve.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the loader arm directional control valve for chafed wires, breaks, or pinch points.

   Disconnect the harness at the loader arm valve solenoids and inspect the connectors for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the common return (ground) wire from the solenoid connector back to the UCM or chassis ground.

   Measure the resistance across the pins of the loader arm valve solenoid itself to check for an internally open coil (infinite resistance/OL).

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the master switch and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the loader arm directional control valve block on the machine.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the common return circuit, splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors.

   Replace Solenoid

   If the solenoid coil tested open: Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty loader arm valve solenoid. Remove the retaining screws or retaining nut holding the solenoid to the valve block. Slide the old solenoid off the valve stem. Install the new solenoid onto the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes from the UCM, and operate the loader arm to verify the repair.
