Case IH 5252 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Bucket Valve (Directional) Solenoid Rollback (A) Supply Shorted To Ground

The electrical supply circuit providing power to the "Rollback" solenoid (Solenoid A) on the loader bucket's directional control valve has found a premature path to the chassis ground. This short circuit prevents the solenoid from energizing, meaning the operator will likely lose the ability to roll the loader bucket back. The system logs this code and typically disables the circuit to prevent wiring damage or blown fuses.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the Loader Bucket Directional Control Valve and identify Solenoid A (the rollback solenoid). Inspect the wiring harness leading to the solenoid for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation where the copper wire might be touching the machine's metal frame.

   Harness Ground Check: Disconnect the electrical connector at the solenoid. Using a digital multimeter, check the supply wire on the harness side for continuity to ground. If there is continuity while disconnected from the solenoid, the wiring harness is shorted and needs repair.

   Solenoid Coil Check: Check the resistance of the solenoid coil itself. Measure the resistance between the solenoid's power terminal and its outer metal casing. If it reads near zero ohms, the solenoid coil has failed internally and is shorting to its own case.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's negative battery cable to prevent further electrical damage during the repair.

   Address the Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a harness short, trace the wire back toward the UCM. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed, heat-shrink butt connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

   If the solenoid coil is internally shorted: Remove the retaining nut at the end of the directional valve stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Clean the valve stem and slide the new solenoid coil into place. Reinstall and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification.

   Reassembly and Testing

   Reconnect the solenoid electrical connector. Reconnect the battery.

   Turn the key on, clear the UCM fault codes, and operate the loader joystick to verify that the bucket rollback function operates smoothly without triggering code 5252.
