Case IH 527 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Cab pressurization/Ether relay coil circuit is shorted high or open
Issue description
The engine controller has detected a malfunction in the electrical circuit that controls either the cab pressurization relay or the ether start relay. The circuit is either broken/disconnected (open circuit) or is improperly receiving high voltage (shorted high).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MX Magnum
- STX Steiger
- Case IH MX Magnum Series
- Case IH TG Series Tractors
- Case IH T8000 Series
- Case IH Steiger / STX Series
Check the cause
Connect a diagnostic tool to verify if the code is active or inactive. If inactive, attempt to clear the code and run the engine to see if it returns.
Turn the key switch OFF, disconnect the engine harness from the ECM and the relay, and inspect all pins and connectors for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Measure the resistance across the relay coil pins to ensure it is not internally open or shorted.
Measure the resistance of the wiring harness between the ECM connector and the relay connector to check for an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, or a short circuit to a voltage source.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn the key switch OFF and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.
Locate the Relay
Locate the Cab Pressurization or Ether Start relay in the tractor's main electrical panel or fuse box.
Test/Replace the Relay
Remove the relay and test it. If the relay coil is open or shorted, replace the relay with a new one.
Repair the Wiring Harness
If the relay tests good, use a multimeter to isolate the wire running from the ECM to the relay. If the wire is broken (open) or rubbed bare and touching power (shorted high), repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the harness entirely.
ECM Verification
If both the relay and the wiring harness test perfectly, the ECM's output driver may have failed. (Replacing the ECM should only be done as a last resort after all other steps are verified).
Clear Codes
Reconnect all components and the battery. Turn the key switch ON, connect your diagnostic tool, and clear the fault codes. Start the engine and let it idle to verify that Fault Code 527 does not return.
