Case IH 5272 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Bucket Valve (Directional) Loader Bucket Solenoid(s) Shorted To Ground
Issue description
The electrical circuit supplying power to the directional solenoids controlling the loader bucket (rollback or dump functions) has a short to ground, preventing the valve from operating correctly.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
- Tractors (Puma, Maxxum, Steiger with ACS option)
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the loader bucket directional valve for chafed, pinched, or melted wires touching the machine's chassis (ground).
Inspect the connectors at the loader bucket solenoids for moisture, corrosion, or damaged pins.
Perform a circuit isolation test: Disconnect the electrical connector from the loader bucket solenoid, turn the key to the ON position, and check active fault codes. If the code changes from 5272 to 5273 (Bucket Valve Solenoids Return Open Circuit), the solenoid is internally shorted. If it remains 5272, the short to ground is located in the wiring harness.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the solenoid coil to the valve body/ground to confirm an internal short.
Repair steps
Prepare the Machine
Park the machine on firm, level ground. Lower the loader bucket/attachment completely to the ground so there is no hydraulic pressure in the lift or tilt cylinders.
Safe Shutdown
Shut down the engine, place the direction control lever in neutral, and place a 'Do Not Operate' tag on the key switch.
Relieve Pressure
Turn the ignition switch to the 'ON' position (without starting the engine) and move the joystick slowly forward and backward to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the lines.
Locate the Valve
Locate the loader control valve block and identify the directional solenoids for the bucket circuit.
Address the Short
If the harness is damaged: Repair the chafed wire using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section. If the solenoid is internally shorted: Remove the retaining nut/bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off.
Install New Part
Slide the new solenoid onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Test
Clear the fault codes from the UCM. Start the machine and test the loader bucket rollback and dump functions to ensure proper operation and that the code does not return.
