Case IH 5273 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Bucket Valve (Directional) Solenoids Return Open Circuit

The control module has detected a break, disconnection, or infinite resistance in the return (ground) circuit of the common solenoid (C) that operates the loader bucket's directional control valve. Because the return circuit is open, the solenoid cannot energize, which will result in a loss of bucket rollback/dump hydraulic functions.

   Visual Inspection: Locate the loader bucket directional control valve block. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the common solenoid (C) for physical damage, chafing, or rodent damage.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the solenoid. Check for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins, which are common causes of an open circuit.

   Continuity Test (Wiring): Using a multimeter, test the return wire from the solenoid connector back to the UCM (or chassis ground, depending on the specific machine's schematic). An infinite reading confirms a broken wire in the harness.

   Resistance Test (Solenoid): Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid coil itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the solenoid coil has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine, lower the loader arms to the ground (if possible), relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Access the Valve

   Lift the cab or open the access panels to reach the main hydraulic directional control valve block.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the return circuit, splice and solder the wire, sealing it with dual-wall heat shrink. If the connector is heavily corroded, splice in a new pigtail connector.

   Solenoid Replacement

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty common solenoid (C). Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. Slide the new OEM solenoid onto the cartridge and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification (do not overtighten, or you may distort the cartridge).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or CAN-Bus DTC Eraser to clear the fault code from the UCM. Alternatively, cycle the ignition key to verify if the active code moves to a stored/inactive state. Test the bucket rollback and dump functions.
