Case IH 5281 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Loader Auxiliary Valve (Directional) Solenoid Forward (A) Supply Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected an open circuit on the power supply line to the "Forward (A)" solenoid on the loader's auxiliary directional control valve. This means electrical current is not flowing through the circuit, which is typically caused by a disconnected plug, a broken wire in the harness, or a burnt-out (open) solenoid coil.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the auxiliary directional control valve block on the loader. Inspect the electrical connector at the Forward (A) solenoid. Look for disconnected plugs, backed-out pins, or heavy corrosion.

  2. Harness Continuity Test: Disconnect the solenoid. Using a multimeter, check the supply wire from the UCM to the solenoid connector for continuity. Check for any pinch points along the loader arm where the harness flexes.

  3. Solenoid Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two pins of the Forward (A) solenoid coil itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the internal coil winding is broken and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Voltage Check: Turn the key ON (engine off) and activate the auxiliary forward function. Check for supply voltage at the harness connector to rule out a UCM output failure.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve any residual pressure in the system.

  2. Access the Valve

    Open the access panels to reach the loader auxiliary control valve block.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the Forward (A) solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem.

  4. Replace the Coil

    Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the cartridge valve itself just to replace the coil).

  5. Install the New Part

    Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem, install and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque spec (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge).

  6. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the machine on, clear the inactive 5281 fault code via the display or EST diagnostic tool, and test the auxiliary hydraulic forward function for proper operation.
