Case IH 5282 – UCM (Universal Control Module) or Master Instrument Cluster: Loader Auxiliary Valve (Directional) Solenoid Forward (A) Supply Shorted To Ground.

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical supply circuit providing power to the "Forward (A)" solenoid on the loader's auxiliary hydraulic directional valve is shorted to ground. This means the voltage is taking a direct path to the chassis ground before reaching or properly passing through the solenoid coil, which will disable the forward auxiliary hydraulic function.

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness from the UCM to the auxiliary valve block. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector directly at the Forward (A) solenoid. Turn the key on and check if the code changes to 5281 (Supply Open Circuit) to isolate the solenoid.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the disconnected solenoid coil and check for continuity to the metal casing.

  4. Inspect the UCM harness connectors for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

  5. Check the working voltage of the PWM signal, which should be between 5.0V and 8.0V.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the machine on level ground, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by cycling the joysticks. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a chafed wire in the harness, cut out the damaged section, solder in a new piece of wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink. Secure the harness away from pinch points using zip ties.

  3. Solenoid Coil Replacement (If Applicable)

    Locate the auxiliary directional control valve block (usually located under the cab or near the loader arm pivots). Disconnect the electrical connector from the Forward (A) solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve cartridge stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem. Slide the new OEM coil onto the stem. Install and tighten the retaining nut (standard torque for these is typically around 5 N·m or 3.7 lb-ft). Reconnect the electrical connector.

  4. Testing

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the stored fault codes. Start the machine and test the auxiliary hydraulics (both forward and reverse) to ensure the code does not return and the attachment operates correctly.
