529

Case IH 529 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Output B driver shorted high or open

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormal voltage on the 'Switched Output B' signal pin of the OEM wiring harness, indicating an open circuit, a short to a high voltage source, or a voltage drop below the expected threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Magnum Series (MX Magnum, 215, 225, 245, 250, 275, 280, 305, 310, 335)
  • Steiger Series
  • TG Series
  • Puma Series
  • T8000 Series

Check the cause

  1. Consult the specific tractor's OEM wiring diagram to determine exactly which relay or solenoid is controlled by the ECM's 'Output B' pin

  2. Disconnect the 31-pin OEM connector at the ECM and inspect the 'Output B' signal pin for corrosion, moisture, or pins that have been pushed back

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the continuity of the Output B signal wire from the ECM connector to the component it controls to check for open circuits

  4. Test the Output B wire for a short to ground (continuity to the chassis) or a short to a high voltage source (battery power)

  5. Measure the resistance (ohms) across the coil of the relay or solenoid controlled by Output B to verify if it is internally open or shorted

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Isolate the Circuit

Disconnect the wiring harness at both the ECM and the Output B actuator/relay.

  3. Repair the Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, chafing, or a short in the harness, repair the damaged section. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the damaged connector pigtail.

  4. Replace the Actuator

If the wiring harness tests perfectly but the relay/solenoid coil is internally shorted or open, unbolt and replace the faulty relay/solenoid.

  5. Reassemble

Apply dielectric grease to the connectors (if recommended by the OEM) and securely reconnect the ECM and the actuator.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the inactive fault codes. Start the engine and verify that code 529 does not return.

  7. Replace ECM

In very rare cases, if the wiring and the relay are both perfect, the internal driver inside the ECM may be burnt out, requiring ECM replacement or repair.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Wiring Harness Repair Kit / Pigtail Connector

Generic OEM electrical repair parts, dependent on which connector is damaged

  • Relay or Solenoid

Specific to the Output B function on your chassis, e.g., Starter Relay or Autoshift Solenoid

  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Only if the internal driver is verified to be burnt out. Part number depends strictly on the engine's CPL/Serial Number
