Case IH 53 – TMF, ARM, or EDC / Hitch Controller: The time allowed for hitch calibration has expired

Issue description

This condition occurs when the operator initiates a 3-point hitch calibration but fails to complete the required steps (such as moving the hitch to the bottom or acknowledging the calibration on the display) within the allowed time limit, which is typically 6 minutes.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series
  • Case IH TG Series
  • Case IH CX Series
  • Case IH STX and Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the hitch position lever is actually set to the minimum position.

  2. Inspect the rear of the tractor for any physical obstructions preventing the hitch from reaching the absolute bottom of its travel.

  3. Check the instrument cluster or display for any other active fault codes. If other fault codes are recorded, they must be corrected before hitch programming/calibration is possible.

  4. Check the hitch position potentiometer for physical damage, loose connections, or a frozen rockshaft lever.

Repair steps

  1. Move hitch position lever

Move the hitch position lever to the minimum position.

  2. Remove physical obstructions

Remove any physical obstructions from the hitch area.

  3. Enter setup menu

Enter the setup main menu on the display and select "HITCH CAL" (Hitch Calibration).

  4. Recalibrate hitch

Follow the on-screen prompts to recalibrate the hitch, ensuring you acknowledge the calibration (when the display shows 'u') within the 6-minute window.

  5. Adjust potentiometer

If the calibration fails again because the hitch position is not registering at the minimum, adjust the hitch position potentiometer.

  6. Replace potentiometer

If adjusting the potentiometer does not resolve the issue, the position potentiometer has failed and must be replaced. After replacement, repeat the calibration procedure.
