Case IH 53 – Transmission Controller, EDC Microprocessor, TMF Controller, or PTO Controller: Microprocessor 5 Volt Reference Shorted To +12 Volts / PTO Solenoid Shorted to 12V
Issue description
Fault Code 53 translates to 'Microprocessor 5 Volt Reference Shorted To +12 Volts' or '5-Volt Reference Voltage Too Low'. A constant 12V supply to the PTO solenoid when commanded off is technically logged as Fault Code 172, indicating a short to power in the wiring harness or an internal failure of the controller keeping the circuit energized.

Check the cause
Turn the PTO switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the PTO solenoid connector (often labeled C159) and measure the voltage at the harness side. If 12 volts is present when the PTO is off, there is a short to power.
Test the resistance of the PTO solenoid at the connector. Depending on the exact solenoid model, resistance should be approximately 6.0 - 6.8 ohms or 8.5 - 9.7 ohms at 25°C (77°F). If it is out of this range, the solenoid is faulty.
Check the wiring harness from the controller connector (e.g., C057) to the PTO solenoid connector for shorts to battery voltage.
Inspect all connector pins for damage, bent pins, loose pins, or corrosion, as these frequently cause voltage bleed-over.
If the wiring harness is intact and not shorted, but 12V remains at the controller pin when the PTO is turned off, the controller itself has failed internally.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, place it in park, and remove the key.
Ensure the machine is safely powered down before beginning repairs.
Locate the PTO solenoid valve assembly (typically on the rear transmission housing) and disconnect its electrical connector.
Access the solenoid to begin physical inspection.
Inspect the connector for bent, loose, or corroded pins. Clean with contact cleaner or repair the pigtail as necessary.
Address any physical damage or corrosion at the connection point.
Use a digital multimeter to check for continuity and shorts in the wiring harness between the PTO/TMF controller and the solenoid.
Verify the integrity of the wiring harness.
If a short to 12V is found in the harness, trace the wire loom, locate the chafed/melted section, and repair the damaged wire (or replace the harness section).
Fix any shorts to power found in the wiring.
If the harness tests good but the solenoid resistance is out of specification, remove the retaining nut on the PTO solenoid, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install a replacement PTO solenoid.
Replace the solenoid if it has failed internally.
If the harness and solenoid are both good, but the controller continuously outputs 12V when commanded off, the TMF/PTO controller must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.
Address an internal controller failure if all other components test good.
Reconnect all components, clear the stored fault codes via the instrumentation panel, and test the PTO engagement/disengagement to verify the repair.
Ensure the system operates correctly and no codes return.
