Case IH 5309 – UCM: Float Button Timeout (30 Seconds)
Issue description
The control system has detected that the float button has been continuously depressed or is sending a continuous closed-circuit signal for more than 30 seconds, indicating a physically stuck button or an electrical short.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- skid steer
- Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
- Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
Check the cause
Inspect the float button on the right-hand control lever (joystick) for physical binding, dirt, or debris that might be wedged around the button, causing it to stick in the depressed position.
Disconnect the joystick harness and use a digital multimeter to test the continuity of the float button switch. Verify that the circuit opens when the button is released and closes only when pressed.
If the switch operates correctly, inspect the wiring harness between the right-hand joystick and the UCM. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or a short-to-ground/short-to-power that could be sending a false continuous signal to the UCM.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, lower the lift arms completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.
Clean the Switch
Use compressed air and electrical contact cleaner to clean the area around the float button on the right-hand joystick.
Component Replacement
If cleaning does not restore the mechanical spring-action of the button, or if the switch failed the continuity test, the switch must be replaced (often requiring replacement of the upper joystick handle assembly).
Wiring Repair
If the switch is functioning normally but the code persists, trace the specific wires for the float circuit down the steering column to the UCM. Cut out and solder/heat-shrink any damaged sections of the wire, or replace the affected harness section.
Verification
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position. Clear the inactive fault codes using a diagnostic service tool (or by cycling the key if it is a self-clearing code). Test the float function to ensure it engages and disengages properly without triggering the 30-second timeout.
Parts you might need
(1)Float Button Switch / Right-Hand Joystick Handle Assembly
Verify your specific machine's serial number and control type (Mechanical vs. EH controls) in the Case IH parts catalog to order the correct right-hand control lever assembly.
