Case IH 5381 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Enhanced High-Flow Auxiliary Option: Reverse Solenoid (B) Supply Short to Ground (STG)

Issue description

This code indicates that the control module has detected a short to ground in the electrical supply circuit that powers the reverse directional solenoid on the Enhanced High-Flow (EHF) hydraulic system.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SV300
  • SR270
  • SR250
  • TV380
  • TR340
  • TV450B
  • C238
  • L230

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness from the UCM to the EHF Reverse Solenoid (B) for rubbed insulation causing a short to ground against the chassis, loader arms, or hydraulic lines

  2. Disconnect the plug at the reverse solenoid and UCM to inspect pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the EHF Reverse Solenoid coil using a multimeter (near zero indicates an internal short)

  4. With the solenoid disconnected and key ON, check the supply wire for continuity to ground to verify if the short is in the wiring harness

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Park the machine on a flat surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and cycle the auxiliary hydraulic controls to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the EHF auxiliary hydraulic valve block (typically located near the EHF gear pump or the base of the loader arms). Identify the Reverse Solenoid (B).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.

  4. Remove the Coil

Remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.

  5. Inspect the Cartridge (Optional)

If the valve is leaking or sticking, unscrew the cartridge valve from the manifold block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new cartridge with clean hydraulic fluid and torque it to OEM specifications.

  6. Install New Coil

Slide the new solenoid coil over the cartridge stem and secure it with the retaining nut (do not overtighten, as this can distort the cartridge).

  7. Reconnect and Clear

Plug the wiring harness back in. Turn on the machine, use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the UCM fault codes, and test the EHF auxiliary reverse function to ensure the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • EHF Reverse Solenoid (B) Coil / Auxiliary Directional Valve Solenoid

Ensure you are ordering the solenoid for the Enhanced High-Flow block, as the standard flow auxiliary solenoids have different flow ratings and connector types.
