Case IH 5382 – UCM (Universal Control Module): EHF Reverse Solenoid (B) Supply OC

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical fault—either a broken wire/disconnected plug (open circuit) or a wire rubbing against the chassis (short to ground)—on the power supply circuit dedicated to the Reverse Solenoid (B) of the Enhanced High-Flow (EHF) pump control valve. Because of this fault, the machine cannot electronically actuate the EHF auxiliary hydraulics in the reverse direction.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the EHF pump control Proportional Relief Valves (PRV) and inspect the wiring harness leading from the UCM to the Reverse Solenoid (B). Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or signs of melting.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the Reverse Solenoid (B). Check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Circuit Testing (Open/Short): Using a multimeter, test the supply wire from the UCM harness connector to the solenoid connector for continuity (to rule out an open circuit). Next, test the supply wire against the machine's chassis ground to ensure it is not shorted to ground.

  4. Coil Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the pins of the Reverse Solenoid (B) coil itself. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (infinite resistance) or zero ohms, the solenoid coil has failed internally and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

    Ensure the machine is safe to work on.

  2. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the auxiliary system.

    Prevents hydraulic fluid spray or unexpected movement.

  3. Open the rear compartment/cab to access the hydrostatic and EHF hydraulic pump assembly.

    Gain access to the necessary components.

  4. Locate the directional control valve block for the EHF system and identify the Reverse Solenoid (B).

    Identify the specific solenoid causing the fault.

  5. Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid.

    Prepare for wiring repair or solenoid replacement.

  6. If the fault is wiring-related: Repair the broken wire or replace the damaged connector pigtail using weather-sealed (heat-shrink) butt connectors.

    Addresses open circuits or shorts in the harness.

  7. If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test: Remove the retaining nut or clip holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off.

    Begin replacement of the faulty solenoid coil.

  8. Slide the new EHF Reverse Solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

    Do not overtighten, as this can warp the coil.

  9. Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid.

    Restore electrical connection to the new or repaired component.

  10. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the machine's display to clear the inactive 5382 fault code.

    Clear the fault from the UCM memory.

  11. Start the machine and test the EHF auxiliary hydraulics in the reverse direction to verify the repair.

    Ensure the system functions correctly and the fault does not return.
