Case IH 54 – Transmission ECM: 5 VOLTS SENSOR SUPPLY SHORT TO GROUND OR OPEN

The ECM detects the reference voltage has dropped below 4.2 volts at ECM connector 2, pin 20. This specific 5-volt circuit supplies power to the Power Shuttle F/N/R lever, the Clutch Pedal Potentiometer, and the Main (C1) and Range (G1) Gear Position Switches.

   Measure the voltage at the Transmission ECM connector 2, pin 20 to verify if it is reading below the 4.2-volt threshold.

   Inspect the wiring harness for bent pins, loose pins, wire damage, and any possible shorts between pins and wires.

   Disconnect the 5-volt sensors on this circuit one at a time (Power Shuttle F/N/R lever, Clutch Pedal Potentiometer, and Gear Position Switches) to see if the 5V reference returns to normal, indicating an internally shorted sensor.

   Isolate the controller by disconnecting the external harness; if the fault code remains active, it indicates an internal failure within the transmission controller.

   Park and secure tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and lock the front wheels using chocks.

   Access ECM and harnesses

   Access the Transmission ECM and the wiring harnesses routing to the F/N/R shuttle lever on the steering column and the clutch pedal potentiometer.

   Repair wiring

   Based on the diagnostic isolation test, repair any chafed or damaged wiring in the harness that is shorting the 5V reference circuit to the chassis ground.

   Replace faulty sensor

   If a sensor was found to be pulling the voltage down, remove and replace the faulty sensor (e.g., the F/N/R shuttle switch or clutch potentiometer).

   Reconnect harnesses

   Reconnect all harness connectors, ensuring no pins are bent or pushed out of the connector body during reassembly.

   Replace ECM

   If the wiring and sensors tested perfectly but the ECM is internally shorted, remove the Transmission ECM and replace it with a new unit.

   Clear codes and test

   Clear the fault codes and test the forward/reverse shuttle operation to verify the repair.
