54040

Case IH 54040 – Hitch Controller: Hitch Raised Signal is failed in the Hitch Controller

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical fault in the hitch raise circuit, typically meaning the hitch raise solenoid or its wiring has failed open, shorted to ground, or shorted to 12 volts.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • Case IH MX Series (MX180, MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285, MX170)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (7100, 7200, 8940, and newer models)
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Hitch Controller connections: Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor, disconnect the green connector (C058), and inspect pin 3 for damage, bent pins, or corrosion.

  2. Test circuit resistance at the controller: Test continuity between pin 1 and pin 3 on the C058 connector. Resistance should be ~5.1 ohms at -40°C, ~6.9 ohms at 25°C, or ~9.5 ohms at 100°C.

  3. Test the solenoid directly: If resistance at the controller is out of range, test continuity between pin 1 and pin 2 at the hitch raise solenoid connector (C152).

  4. Check the wiring harness: If the solenoid tests good at C152 but bad at C058, check the wiring harness between connector C058 and C152 for an open circuit or a short to 12 volts/ground.

  5. Verify the controller: If the wiring and solenoid are both within specification, clear the code, start the engine, and test the hitch. If the fault code returns, the hitch controller has an internal failure.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Turn off the tractor, lower any implements to the ground (if possible), and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If the diagnostic checks revealed high resistance or a short in the harness, repair the damaged wire between C058 and C152, or replace the connector pigtails if the pins are heavily corroded.

  3. Replace the Hitch Raise Solenoid

If the solenoid failed the resistance test, relieve hydraulic system pressure, remove the faulty hitch raise solenoid valve from the distributor block, and install the new solenoid.

  4. Replace the Hitch Controller

If the harness and solenoid are fully functional, remove the faulty hitch controller from the rear of the tractor and install the replacement module.

  5. Recalibrate

After replacing the controller or the solenoid, you must perform a hitch calibration procedure via the tractor's display/diagnostic menu to ensure proper drop rate and raise thresholds.
