54060

Case IH 54060 – Instrumentation Controller (INST): Ground Speed Signal is failed in the Instrumentation Controller

Issue description

The controller is no longer receiving a valid ground speed reading from the tractor's radar gun/ground speed sensor, which is required for functions like wheel slip sensing, PTO operation, and hitch draft control.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • Magnum
  • TG Series
  • Steiger
  • MX210
  • MX220
  • MX230
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes: If fault code HITCH 3010 is present alongside PTO 54060, the problem is almost certainly the radar gun itself. If only 54060 is present, there is a small chance it is an instrumentation controller malfunction.

  2. Test the Radar Gun Wiring: Locate the radar sensor and disconnect connector C068 at the radar.

  3. Turn the tractor key to the 'RUN' position and measure the power supply at Pin C of connector C068. It should read approximately 5 VDC.

  4. Check Pin A of connector C068 for good continuity to a clean chassis ground.

  5. Harness Check: If power or ground is missing, check the wiring harness for open circuits or shorts between the radar sensor and the Instrumentation Controller.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the ground speed radar sensor assembly mounted on its bracket under the tractor.

  3. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the electrical connector (C068) from the sensor.

  4. Remove mounting bolts

Remove the mounting bolts securing the radar sensor to the bracket (often requires a 1/2" or M6 socket/wrench depending on the exact model year hardware).

  5. Remove old sensor

    Remove the old radar sensor.

  6. Install new sensor

Mount the new radar sensor to the bracket and secure the hardware.

  7. Reconnect and secure wiring

Reconnect the C068 wiring harness connector. Use a cable tie to secure the wire away from moving parts or debris.

  8. Clear codes and test drive

Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes in the Instrumentation Controller, and test drive the tractor to verify the ground speed registers on the dash and the code does not return.
