Case IH 54080 – Instrument Controller (INST): Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor has failed in the Instrumentation Controller

The tractor's Data Bus has signaled that the instrument controller is no longer receiving a valid reading from the transmission oil temperature sensor.

   Check for associated Instrument Controller (INST) sub-codes, specifically INST 13021 (sensor voltage too low / short to ground) or INST 13022 (sensor voltage too high / open circuit / short to +V)

   Test the transmission oil temperature sensor resistance with a multimeter to verify if it is out of specification

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the instrumentation controller to the transmission oil temperature sensor for any shorts to ground, chafing, or open circuits

   Check for a software execution error within the instrument controller itself if the sensor and wiring are intact

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing.

   Inspect and Repair Wiring

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion or damage. Trace the hard-wiring back to the Instrument Controller. If a short or break is found, repair the wiring harness.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the resistance test (or if codes 13021/13022 are present and wiring is ruled out), remove the old sensor and install a new OEM transmission oil temperature sensor.

   Address the Controller

   If the sensor and wiring are both verified as good, the fault may lie in the instrument controller software. The controller may need to be reflashed, updated, or replaced by a dealer.

   Clear Codes

   Clear the fault codes from the system and test the tractor to ensure the Data Bus is successfully reading the transmission temperature.
