Case IH 5409 – UCM (Universal Control Module) or IC (Instrument Cluster): CAN Message Error: Aux Override Disabled Due To Aux Override Button Timeout (30 Seconds)

Issue description

Triggered when the UCM detects that the Auxiliary Override button (located on the instrument cluster/keypad) has been pressed and held, or is physically stuck, for more than 30 seconds. The system disables the auxiliary override function as a safety precaution to prevent the seat interlock from being permanently bypassed.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR160
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV185
  • SV250
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380

Check the cause

  1. Verify operator procedure to ensure the button is not simply being held down for too long (correct procedure is to press the Aux Override button and leave the seat within 30 seconds)

  2. Inspect the Aux Override button on the instrument cluster/keypad for dirt, debris, or physical damage that might cause the button membrane to stick in the depressed position

  3. Use the machine's diagnostic menu or a service tool to monitor the live state of the Aux Override switch (if the UCM constantly reads the switch as 'closed' or 'pressed' without physical input, the switch is internally shorted)

  4. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the instrument cluster to the UCM for any shorts to ground or power that could be corrupting the CAN messages

Repair steps

  1. Clean the Keypad

Carefully clean the instrument cluster keypad area around the Aux Override button to remove any debris that might be causing the button to bind.

  2. Replace the Instrument Cluster

If the button is internally shorted or permanently stuck, the entire instrument cluster assembly must be replaced.

  3. Program the New Cluster

If a new instrument cluster is installed, it must be programmed by an authorized dealer to sync with the machine's UCM and retain correct hour meter data.

  4. Clear Codes

Clear the 5409 fault code using the machine's diagnostic interface or an authorized service tool.

  5. Functional Test

Test the Aux Override function by pressing the button and verifying that the 30-second countdown initiates properly on the display without triggering the fault code.
