Case IH 54150 – Instrumentation Controller (INST) or Performance Controller: Communications Lost with Hitch Controller
Issue description
The tractor's data bus is no longer receiving signals from the electronic module responsible for controlling the rear hitch.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- MX Magnum
- TG Series
Check the cause
Check for related codes (e.g., 10090, 10060, 10061, 10030, 12043) that might pinpoint the failure
Inspect electrical wiring harnesses, CAN bus connectors, and relays leading to the Hitch Controller for corrosion, shorts to ground, or open circuits
Verify that the Hitch Controller is receiving unswitched power, switched power, and has a clean chassis ground
Repair steps
Resolve Wiring Issues
If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or corroded pins on the Tractor Data Bus leading to the hitch controller, repair or replace the affected harness sections.
Re-calibrate the Hitch
If communication is restored but the hitch does not operate (or if code 10030/9317 is present), the controller has lost its memory. You must perform the Hitch Controller Calibration procedure. Ensure the engine speed is set above 1600 RPM during the calibration of the lower valve (per code 9318) and that the tractor is completely stationary (code 9320).
Replace the Controller
If the wiring is intact, power/ground are verified, and the controller still will not communicate (or has internal failures like a blown 5V regulator), the Hitch Controller module itself has failed and must be replaced.
