Case IH 54221 – PTO Controller: PTO Shaft rotation is NOT detected when PTO engagement is attempted

Issue description

The PTO controller monitors the PTO clutch output speed. This fault code is triggered if the controller commands the PTO to engage but does not detect any rotation from the PTO shaft.

Check the cause

  1. Check the implement connected to the PTO to ensure the load is proper and not mechanically binding or stalling the shaft.

  2. Check for accompanying fault codes (PTO 6013, 6015, 6019, and 10061) indicating PTO shaft slippage. If any exist, diagnose those first.

  3. Verify the alternator is the correct model, as an incorrect alternator gives the wrong signal frequency.

  4. Check for a worn or slipping alternator belt.

  5. Check the engine RPM signal wiring: verify continuity between cavity 1 of PTO connector C056 and terminal W of the alternator.

  6. Using a service tool, monitor the parameter PTO ENGINE SPEED FREQUENCE to verify the controller is reading the input speed.

  7. Check the continuity of the PTO speed sensor wiring from Pin 10 of connector C056 to Pin A of connector C145, and from Pin B of connector C145 to the chassis ground.

  8. Test the function of the PTO speed sensor with a multimeter. It should have a resistance of approximately 3,000 ohms (3 K ohms).

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Implement

    Disconnect the implement from the tractor and attempt to engage the PTO. If it engages normally, the implement is jammed or the load is too heavy.

  2. Inspect and Replace Alternator Belt

    If the alternator belt is worn or loose, replace/tension it so the alternator can send a steady RPM signal to the PTO controller.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If continuity tests fail between the PTO controller (C056), the alternator (Terminal W), or the speed sensor (C145), locate the break or short to ground in the harness and repair the wiring.

  4. Replace the PTO Speed Sensor

    If the PTO speed sensor fails the 3 K ohm resistance test, remove the faulty sensor from the PTO housing and install a new OEM sensor.

  5. Mechanical Hydraulic Inspection

    If all electrical signals (alternator RPM and speed sensor resistance) are correct and there are no wiring faults, the issue is mechanical. Check the PTO clutch pressure and PTO valve. Inspect for and repair a sticking PTO solenoid or valve spool, a leaking PTO clutch seal or burned clutch pads, or a physically broken PTO shaft.
