Case IH 54251 – PTO Controller System: PTO Shaft rotation is detected when the PTO clutch is OFF

Issue description

The PTO controller monitors the output speed of the PTO clutch via a speed sensor. If the controller detects a speed signal indicating that the PTO shaft is rotating while the PTO engagement switch is in the OFF position, it triggers this fault code.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • Case IH MX180
  • Case IH MX200
  • Case IH MX210
  • Case IH MX215
  • Case IH MX220
  • Case IH MX230
  • Case IH MX240
  • Case IH MX245
  • Case IH MX255
  • Case IH MX270
  • Case IH MX285
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the implement: Ensure the implement attached to the tractor is not back-driving or causing the PTO to turn mechanically.

  2. Visual Operation Check: Restart the tractor with the PTO switch in the OFF position. Toggle the PTO on and off to visually verify if the shaft is actually spinning.

  3. Monitor Speeds: Monitor the engine speed and PTO speed either at the instrument cluster or using a diagnostic service tool.

  4. Engine RPM Signal Check (If no engine speed is displayed while running): Check the engine RPM signal wiring for continuity between cavity 1 of the PTO connector (C056) and terminal W of the alternator. Verify the engine RPM signal at terminal W of the alternator.

  5. PTO Speed Sensor Wiring Check (If PTO speed is displayed when the engine is NOT running): Check continuity from Pin 10 of connector C056 to Pin A of connector C145. Check continuity from Pin B of connector C145 to the chassis ground.

  6. Test the PTO Speed Sensor: Measure the resistance of the PTO speed sensor. A healthy sensor should have a resistance of approximately 3 K ohms (3,000 ohms).

  7. Inspect Connectors: Always inspect connector ends for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Tractor

Disconnect any implements from the PTO shaft to ensure no external rotational forces are at play.

  2. Resolve Electrical/Sensor Faults

If the PTO speed sensor fails the 3 K ohm resistance test, or if the wiring harness shows shorts/opens during the diagnostic checks, replace the PTO speed sensor or repair the harness wiring. Clear the codes and retest.

  3. Address Hydraulic Valve Leakage

If the sensor and wiring are good, but the shaft is physically spinning when commanded off, the PTO Control Valve (Distributor Valve) may be leaking hydraulic pressure internally, causing the clutch to partially engage. Replace the PTO control valve assembly.

  4. Rebuild the PTO Clutch

If the valve is functioning properly but the shaft still drags/spins, the internal PTO clutch pack has likely suffered mechanical failure (e.g., warped friction discs or separator plates causing mechanical drag). The hydraulic fluid must be drained, the PTO clutch assembly removed, and the clutch pack rebuilt using a new clutch kit.
