Case IH 55 – Instrument Cluster (ICU2) or Cab Controller / Armrest Controller: Audible alarm open circuit

An open circuit in the audible alarm system indicates that the control module is unable to detect a complete electrical path to the alarm buzzer. This means there is a break in the wiring, a disconnected plug, a damaged harness (such as rodent damage), or the internal coil of the audible alarm itself has failed and broken continuity.

   Visually inspect all wiring and harnesses leading to the instrument cluster and the audible alarm for breaks, loose pins, or rodent damage (especially inside main frames or cab consoles).

   Disconnect the harness from the alarm and the instrument controller, then use a multimeter to check for good continuity on the signal line between the controller pins (e.g., CN1/CN2 on the ICU) and the alarm connector.

   Verify there is good continuity between the alarm's ground pin and a clean chassis ground.

   Measure the resistance across the terminals of the audible alarm itself. If the multimeter reads infinite resistance (OL), the alarm has an internal open circuit.

   With the key ON and an alarm condition simulated (e.g., parking brake engaged while detecting ground speed), check for voltage (typically 5-15V) at the controller output to ensure the ECU is actually sending the signal.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable to prevent sparks or damage to the instrument cluster during repair.

   Access the Alarm

   Remove the necessary trim panels on the steering column, dash, or instrument cluster to access the audible alarm mounting bracket.

   Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, locate the break and repair the open circuit in the wire harness signal line using proper splice connectors and heat shrink.

   Replace the Alarm (If Applicable)

   If the alarm itself failed the continuity test, unplug the wiring harness, unbolt the alarm from its mounting bracket, and install the new OEM audible alarm.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reconnect the wiring harness and the negative battery cable. Turn the key to the ON position (accessory mode) to verify the display powers up. Trigger a known alarm condition (such as the display test or parking brake alarm) to confirm the audible alarm sounds correctly.
