Case IH 55 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) Controller or EDC/Hitch Controller: Hitch position range from top to bottom is not within spec during calibration.
Issue description
During the automated hitch calibration procedure, the hitch position sensor (potentiometer) did not register a wide enough voltage or resistance range between the fully raised (top) and fully lowered (bottom) positions. The controller requires a specific minimum sweep of the sensor to accurately map the hitch's physical travel limits. If the mechanical linkage is out of adjustment, binding, or the sensor has an internal dead spot, the calibration will abort and log this code.

Check the cause
Ensure the 3-point hitch can physically move through its entire range of motion without binding or hitting an obstruction.
Inspect the mechanical linkage connecting the rockshaft to the hitch position sensor for bent rods, loose locknuts, or disconnected pivot points.
Verify the position sensor is assembled properly, ensuring a gap of approximately 20mm (0.79 in) between the sensor body and the locknut, and that the rotating shaft mark is aligned correctly.
Test the position sensor wire harness for continuity, verifying a 5-volt reference signal, a good ground, and a smooth, linear variable voltage output on the signal wire as the hitch is manually raised and lowered.
Repair steps
Adjust the Linkage
If the sensor linkage is out of adjustment, loosen the locknut and adjust the rod length so the sensor sits closer to the center of its sweep. Ensure the sensor is not bottoming out before the hitch reaches its physical upper or lower limits.
Replace the Sensor
If the potentiometer has a dead spot or fails the voltage sweep test, disconnect the 3-pin connector, unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket, and install a new hitch position potentiometer.
Prepare for Calibration
Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground with no implement attached to the 3-point hitch (no load).
Run the Hitch Calibration
Enter the tractor's diagnostic/calibration menu and initiate the Hitch Calibration procedure. Note: Engine speed must typically be set above 1600 RPM during the calibration of the lower valve.
Verify
Allow the tractor to automatically raise and lower the hitch. If the sensor sweep is now within specification, the calibration will save successfully and clear Code 55.
