Case IH 55011 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Aftertreatment Control Module: Hydrocarbon Injection (HCI) Pump Malfunction
Issue description
This code indicates a malfunction regarding the Hydrocarbon Injection (HCI) pump, which is part of the exhaust aftertreatment/emissions system. FMI 9 indicates communication failure, FMI 15 indicates high temperature, and FMI 31 indicates abnormal status.

Check the cause
For FMI 9 (Communication): Check the CAN bus wiring harness connecting the ECU to the HCI pump for opens, shorts, or high resistance.
For FMI 15 (High Temp): Inspect the HCI pump/doser for exposure to excessive exhaust heat, check coolant/cooling lines routed to the doser, and ensure there are no exhaust leaks blowing directly onto the pump.
Verify power and ground pins at the HCI pump connector.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the battery before servicing the aftertreatment system.
Inspect wiring harness
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the HCI pump. Repair any chafed wires or corroded pins.
Clear debris and check dosing block
If FMI 15 is present, clear any debris blocking cooling to the pump and verify the dosing block isn't clogged with soot/crystallized fluid.
Diagnose internal circuitry failure
If wiring and cooling are intact but the code persists (especially FMI 31 or 9), the internal circuitry of the HCI pump has likely failed.
Replace HCI pump
Unbolt the HCI pump from its mounting bracket, disconnect the fuel/fluid lines, and install a replacement pump.
Clear code and test
Reconnect the battery and use a diagnostic tool to clear the code and run an aftertreatment dosing test to verify the repair.
