Case IH 5502 – UCM (Universal Control Module) / IC (Instrument Cluster): Loader Arm Spool Sensor Shorted To Power

Issue description

The sensor monitoring the position of the loader arm spool valve is sending a voltage signal that is too high (shorted to power). The control module is seeing a voltage near or at the 5V reference or battery voltage, indicating an internal short inside the sensor or a short-to-power in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the loader arm spool sensor (located on the main hydraulic control valve) for rubbed-through wire insulation, corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Perform a disconnect test to isolate the cause: Disconnect the electrical connector from the loader arm spool sensor and turn the key ON. If the fault code changes to 5501, the sensor has an internal short. If the fault code remains 5502, there is a short-to-power in the machine's wiring harness.

  3. If the code remained 5502 (harness fault), use a multimeter to check the sensor signal wire for continuity to the 5V reference or 12V power supply lines.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface. Lower the loader arms completely to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure.

  2. Safety First

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, attach a 'Do Not Operate' tag, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical spikes.

  3. Locate the Sensor

    Access the main hydraulic control valve block. Identify the spool position sensor specifically mounted to the loader arm section of the valve (do not confuse it with the bucket valve spool sensor).

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Disconnect the electrical connector. Unbolt or unthread the faulty spool sensor from the valve body.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Install the replacement sensor into the spool valve and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

    Start the machine and verify that the 5502 fault code has cleared. Perform an Electro-Hydraulic (EH) control calibration using the electronic service tool or in-cab monitor so the UCM can learn the new sensor's neutral, minimum, and maximum voltage parameters.
