55023

Case IH 55023: The 'Bypass' spool is stuck in the off position

Issue description

The bypass spool is failing to open a secondary relief or bypass circuit, which can cause oil starvation, filter collapse, erratic shifting, or overpressurization.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Check hydraulic fluid and filters for contamination, milky appearance, metal shavings, or a crushed/collapsed filter element

  2. Test solenoid actuation by checking the resistance (ohms) of the solenoid coil and ensuring it receives 12V from the ECU

  3. Perform a manual spool check by relieving hydraulic pressure and attempting to push the spool to ensure it moves smoothly against spring tension

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

Turn off the machine, lower all implements to the ground, and cycle the hydraulic remotes to relieve all residual system pressure.

  2. Drain Fluid

Drain the hydraulic fluid from the affected valve block or transmission housing.

  3. Access the Valve Block

Remove the solenoid coil (if applicable) and unscrew the retaining plug or end cap for the bypass spool bore.

  4. Extract the Spool

Carefully pull the spool out of the valve body. If it is jammed, you may need a brass pick or a specialized extraction tool. Do not use hardened steel tools that could score the valve bore.

  5. Inspect and Clean

Inspect the spool and the bore for scoring, burrs, or trapped debris (like missing screen mesh or metal flakes).

  6. Polish or Replace

If the spool has minor scuffing, it can sometimes be polished with crocus cloth. If it is deeply scored, the spool (and potentially the entire valve body) must be replaced.

  7. Reassemble

Lubricate the new/cleaned spool with clean hydraulic fluid. Reinstall the spool, the return spring, and the end cap with a new O-ring.

  8. Refill and Test

Refill the system with OEM-spec hydraulic fluid (e.g., Case IH Hy-Tran), replace the hydraulic filters, and test the machine for proper operation and leaks.

Parts you might need
