Case IH 5504 – Universal Control Module (UCM), Instrument Cluster (IC), or ECU: Bucket Valve Spool Sensor Open Or Shorted To Ground

This fault indicates an electrical circuit issue where the signal from the bucket valve spool sensor is either completely disconnected (open circuit) or shorted directly to ground. This prevents the control module from reading the physical position of the bucket valve spool, which can disable or limit bucket hydraulic functions.

   Visually inspect the bucket valve spool sensor pigtail and main wiring harness for physical damage, rubbing, or pinched wires.

   Disconnect the sensor and check pins on both the sensor and harness sides for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

   With the key ON (engine off), check the harness connector for proper reference voltage (typically 5V) and a good ground.

   Test the signal wire from the sensor connector back to the UCM/ECU for continuity, and test for continuity to ground to check for a shorted harness.

   If the harness tests good (no shorts, no open wires, proper reference voltage), verify if the sensor itself has failed internally.

   Relieve Hydraulic Pressure

   Lower the loader arms and bucket to the ground. Turn off the engine and cycle the hydraulic controls to relieve any residual pressure in the system.

   Access the Valve Block

   Lift the cab or remove the necessary access panels to reach the main hydraulic control valve (usually located under the cab or in the chassis belly).

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the bucket valve spool sensor. Unbolt or unthread the sensor from the bucket spool section of the hydraulic valve.

   Install the New Sensor

   Install the replacement sensor, ensuring any O-rings or seals are properly seated. Torque to the specification found in your specific model's service manual.

   Reconnect and Clear

   Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key ON, connect a diagnostic tool (like the CNH EST), and clear the inactive 5504 fault code.

   Test Operation

   Start the machine and operate the bucket tilt/curl functions to verify the sensor is reading correctly and the amber warning lamp remains off.
