55042

Case IH 55042 – STEERING: No current is sensed flowing through the ARTIC_BYPASS driver pin when expected

Issue description

The controller is detecting an open circuit, high resistance, or a disconnected load on the Articulation Bypass valve driver circuit. The controller is trying to energize the bypass valve solenoid, but no electrical current is flowing.

Applies to these machines

  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH STX Series
  • STX-275
  • STX-325
  • STX-375
  • STX-450
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Articulation Bypass valve solenoid for obvious breaks, chafing, or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the harness from the bypass valve solenoid and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins inside the connector.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the bypass valve solenoid coil using a multimeter to check for an open circuit (O.L / infinite resistance) or out-of-spec reading.

  4. Disconnect the harness at the STEERING controller and check for continuity on the driver wire from the controller pin to the valve connector, and verify the ground circuit for the valve is intact.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Valve

Locate the steering hydraulic manifold where the Articulation Bypass valve is mounted.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, splice in a new connector pigtail or repair the broken wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.

  4. Replace Solenoid

If the solenoid coil tested open: Clean the area around the valve to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old coil off and install the new replacement coil. Tighten the retaining nut to OEM torque specs (do not overtighten, or you may distort the valve spool).

  5. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the key on, access the diagnostic menu on the A-post or Pro 700 display, and clear the inactive 55042 fault code. Start the tractor and articulate the steering to verify the code does not return.
