Case IH 55049 – Steering Controller (STEERING): No current is sensed flowing through the RELAY driver pin when expected

Issue description

The control module is commanding a steering-related relay to activate, but it detects zero or abnormally low current draw on the driver circuit (specifically at Pin C056-7). This typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected harness, a pushed-out pin, or a failed relay coil.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Steering Controller and disconnect connector C056. Inspect Pin 7 specifically for corrosion, moisture, bent pins, or a pin that has been pushed out of the plastic connector housing.

  2. Trace the wire from Pin C056-7 to the corresponding steering relay in the fuse/relay panel. Use a multimeter to check for continuity to rule out an open wire or break in the harness.

  3. Remove the affected steering relay and test the resistance across the relay coil pins. If the coil is open (infinite resistance), the relay has failed.

  4. Verify that the relay block and the steering controller have clean, tight ground connections.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Steering Controller

    Locate the steering controller module (usually located in the cab console or under the cab floor depending on the exact STX model).

  3. Repair the Harness/Connector

    If Pin C056-7 is pushed out or damaged, use a pin-extraction tool to remove it. Crimp a new terminal onto the wire and re-seat it firmly into the C056 connector block. If the wire is broken between the controller and the relay panel, splice and solder a repair wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing.

  4. Replace the Relay

    If the harness tests good but the relay coil is open, replace the steering relay with a new OEM equivalent.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the C056 connector to the steering controller. Reinstall the relay into the fuse/relay panel.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's AFS/Pro display or diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 55049 fault code. Start the tractor and cycle the steering lock-to-lock to ensure the code does not return and the steering priority systems function correctly.
