Case IH 5505 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Bucket Valve Spool Sensor Shorted To Power

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the bucket valve spool position sensor that is higher than the maximum expected range. This typically points to a wiring harness shorted to a power source (12V or 5V) or an internal short within the sensor itself. When this code is active, it triggers an Amber Master Telltale/Warning Lamp.

   Inspect the wiring harness running from the UCM to the main hydraulic control valve for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that could be shorting the sensor's signal wire to a power circuit.

   Disconnect the bucket valve spool sensor connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

   With the sensor unplugged, turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to check the signal wire on the harness side. If it reads high voltage (5V or 12V), the short is in the wiring harness.

   If the harness voltage is normal when unplugged, the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Park and secure machine

   Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms and bucket completely to the ground, and turn off the engine.

   Relieve hydraulic pressure

   Cycle the joysticks to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

   Locate control valve block

   Locate the main hydraulic control valve block (usually accessed by raising the cab or opening the rear/top access panels, depending on the specific skid steer model).

   Identify sensor

   Identify the bucket valve spool position sensor mounted on the end of the bucket control spool.

   Disconnect sensor connector

   Disconnect the electrical pigtail/connector from the faulty sensor.

   Remove faulty sensor

   Unbolt or unscrew the sensor from the hydraulic valve body. (Have a rag handy, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may weep out).

   Install new sensor

   Install the new OEM spool position sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

    Clear fault code

    Reconnect the battery, power on the machine, and use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the advanced instrument cluster to clear the inactive 5505 fault code.

    Verify operation

    Start the machine and operate the bucket tilt functions to verify smooth operation and ensure the code does not return.
