Case IH 55054 – STEERING Controller: Overcurrent condition on a steering driver circuit

The controller has detected that too much current is sensed flowing through the FRONT_STEER_RIGHT (or LEFT) driver. The circuit is drawing more amperage than the controller's internal driver is rated to handle, which is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness, an internally shorted steering solenoid coil, or a burnt driver inside the controller itself.

   Trace the wiring harness from the Steering Controller to the front steering control valve solenoids. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the steering solenoid. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (Ohms) across the solenoid coil pins. If the resistance is extremely low (near 0 Ohms) or out of the OEM specification range, the coil is internally shorted and is pulling too much current.

   Inspect the solenoid and controller connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit.

   If the wiring and solenoid test good, the fault may be a failed (shorted) internal driver inside the Steering Controller itself.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition key and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent further electrical damage or accidental steering articulation.

   Resolve Wiring Issues

   If a short to ground was found in the harness, repair the damaged section using a weatherproof splice or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut on the steering control valve, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install the new solenoid coil.

   Replace the Controller

   If the harness and solenoid are perfectly intact but the code persists immediately upon key-on, the Steering Controller's internal driver is burnt and the module must be replaced and reprogrammed.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Access the tractor's diagnostic menu (via the AFS Pro display or the Trans/Steering Setup menu) and clear the stored fault codes. Start the machine and actuate the steering to verify the code does not return.
