Case IH 55055 – Steering Controller: Overcurrent in the steering system (FRONT_STEER_LEFT driver pin)

The system has detected that too much current is sensed flowing through the FRONT_STEER_LEFT driver pin. This means the electrical current draw on the output pin powering the front left steering proportional valve/solenoid has exceeded safe operational limits, typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal coil within the steering solenoid, or an internal failure of the controller itself.

   Retrieve all active fault codes, clear them, and cycle the key to see if 55055 returns immediately (indicating a hard short) or only when the steering wheel is turned (indicating a load-dependent short).

   Trace the wiring harness from the Steering Controller to the steering control valve assembly. Look for pinched wires, chafing against the tractor frame, or exposed copper that could be shorting to ground.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the front left steering solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, bent terminals, or water ingress, which can bridge the connection and cause a short.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the steering solenoid coil. If the resistance reads near zero ohms, the coil is internally shorted.

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   This prevents electrical damage during the repair.

   Locate the steering control valve assembly.

   Typically mounted near the articulation joint or under the cab on STX models.

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the faulty steering solenoid.

   Repair or replace damaged wiring.

   If the wiring is damaged: Repair the affected wires using appropriate weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace that section of the steering harness.

   Replace the shorted solenoid or valve assembly.

   If the solenoid is shorted: Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem and slide the faulty solenoid off. Install the new solenoid coil and torque the retaining nut to OEM specifications. (Note: On some Danfoss/Eaton valve blocks, the solenoid cannot be serviced separately, and the entire steering control valve assembly must be replaced).

   Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid.

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and clear the fault codes.

   Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times.

   Verify proper operation and ensure the fault code does not return.
