Case IH 55057 – Steering Control Module: Too much current is sensed flowing through the MAKEUP_RIGHT driver pin

The controller is detecting a current draw that exceeds the safe operating threshold on the circuit that controls the right makeup valve (or right proportional steering valve) within the hydraulic steering system, typically caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted solenoid coil.

   Trace the wiring harness from the steering control module to the main steering control valve block, looking for pinched wires, chafing against the chassis, or melted insulation (short to ground)

   Disconnect the harness at the right makeup valve solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage that could bridge the circuit

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the right makeup valve solenoid coil to check for an internal short (near zero resistance)

   With the solenoid unplugged, turn the key ON and check if the fault code changes to an 'open circuit' code to isolate the short to the wiring harness

   Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the main steering control valve assembly (often an Eaton-style valve block located near the articulation joint on 4WD tractors or under the cab).

   Identify the right makeup valve solenoid on the valve block.

   If the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring issue, repair the chafed wire using heat-shrink tubing or replace the damaged section of the steering harness.

   If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut on the end of the solenoid stem and slide the faulty coil off.

   Install the new solenoid coil, tighten the retaining nut, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Note: If the coil is not serviced separately, the entire steering control valve or priority valve may need to be replaced.

   Reconnect the battery.

   Start the machine, clear the inactive fault codes from the monitor, and cycle the steering fully to the right and left (or engage the auto-guidance system) to verify the code does not return.
